Community Report
Imogene rests on a ridge in southwest Iowa, just east of the rolling Loess Hills. Its location at roughly the midpoint of the 62.3-mile Wabash Trace Nature Trail makes the community’s trailhead a popular stop for trail users. Imogene residents’ pride in their Irish Heritage is on full display in the form of a shamrock mural on Railroad Street, The Irish Rose Forest, the Emerald Isle restaurant, and the iconic St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Community Assessments
The importance of the Wabash Trace Nature Trail and the potential to develop the trailhead were common themes during a public input workshop consisting of small-group conversations and mapping. Residents also raised the issue of the deteriorating roadway conditions and the need for pedestrian connections throughout town.

Planning and Design Summary
Resident input played an important role in the goal-setting process, through which the visioning committee set the following performance objectives:
Improved Road Conditions — Resurface and widen roadways to create safer travel conditions and implement stormwater management strategies in the right-of-way to increase the character of the street and adjacent properties while providing better ecological solutions.
Downtown Access & Aesthetics —Improve the quality and character of the core of the community to make it more welcoming and active for residents and visitor alike, while celebrating the vibrant culture and history of Imogene.
Trailhead & Campground Expansion — Introduce RV camping along with a variety of new amenities, including a Discovery Trail, gathering spaces, tent camping, and campground parking.
Way-finding & Visual Identity — Introduce signage and artistic installations to draw visitors into town, enrich the story and experience of Imogene, and create awareness of what the community has to offer.
