Public Input Opportunity: Virtual Focus Groups

Emmetsburg is participating in the 2021 Community Visioning process with several partners including Trees Forever, Iowa State University, Iowa DOT, and private landscape architects. The goal of this project is to develop a community transportation enhancement plan that illustrates the vision of Emmetsburg. Public input is an important part of this process. While we have a local steering committee, this Community Visioning process needs input from members of the community.

Iowa State University is gathering information from community members via virtual focus group sessions to gather opinions and suggestions on how to improve the community’s landscape through transportation enhancements. Keep in mind transportation means more than simply car and truck traffic. Walking, biking, jogging, golf carting, etc. are all forms of transportation. To gather local input from the larger community, 60-90 minute virtual focus groups are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, March 25th at 5:30 PM – Active Recreationists
  • Saturday, March 27th at 9:00 AM – Mobility Impaired
  • Saturday, March 27th at 9:00 AM – Older Adults (65 and older)

Additionally, the Emmetsburg Community School District is coordinating focus group sessions for 5-12 year olds, 13-18 year olds, and parents.

Your ideas about community design and enhancement are valuable to the Emmetsburg visioning committee. The committee values feedback from all community members and will try to get as many perspectives as possible. If you would like to participate in one of three focus groups listed above, please contact Gretchen Reichter, Emmetsburg Marketing & Retail Coordinator, at 712-415-1142 or greichter@emmetsburg. In order to stay within the allotted timeframe, participation is limited.

Emmetsburg Visioning Committee Seeks Residents’ Input

Emmetsburg has been chosen to participate in this year’s Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program. Iowa State University is conducting a survey to learn residents’ opinions on how to improve Emmetsburg’s landscape through transportation enhancements. The goal of the project is to develop a landscape plan that will graphically illustrate the vision of the community. Input from residents is an important part of this process and ideas about community design and enhancement are valuable to the Emmetsburg visioning committee.

Survey packets are being mailed to randomly selected residents in Emmetsburg. If you receive a packet, kindly take a moment to complete the questionnaire and mail it back using the enclosed postage-paid envelope. The questionnaire will take approximately 25 minutes to complete.

In addition to the survey, the visioning committee will be meeting regularly to discuss transportation enhancement plans for Emmetsburg. The committee will also host a design workshop this summer. These meetings are open to all residents.

To learn more about participating in the visioning process, please call Gretchen Reichter, City of Emmetsburg Marketing & Retail Coordinator, at 712-415-1142 or Jeff Jensen, Trees Forever field coordinator, at 515-320-6756.

Community Visioning vs. Strategic Planning:

The City of Emmetsburg is participating in the Community Visioning Program in addition to the City’s joint strategic planning efforts with Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities and Emmetsburg Community School District. The community-wide strategic plan, to be finished by spring, will be a “big-picture” document directing efforts and resources toward clearly defined priorities, projects, and goals. The Community Visioning Program will be ongoing through November 2021 and will result in a landscape plan with a focus on landscape and transportation enhancements. Possible enhancements could include sidewalk and trail improvements, new wayfinding signage, tree plantings, new campground/park amenities, and more.

The Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Extension Landscape Architecture and Trees Forever.
