Public Input Findings

To capture insights about transportation from a variety of perspectives, we conducted virtual community focus groups and sent a random-sample survey to 425 Emmetsburg households. In addition, we surveyed 9th- and 12th-grade students from the Emmetsburg High School. The quantitative data collected from survey responses complement the qualitative information gathered from the focus groups. Community Design Workshop – August 11

The City of Emmetsburg was selected to participate in this year’s Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program. Community Visioning integrates both technical landscape planning and design techniques into a sustainable goal-setting process in order to create a community enhancement plan that reflects the values and identity of the community. Public participation is key to identifying the needs and desires of the community. Throughout this calendar year, a local steering committee has worked to facilitate the visioning process and gather public input.

Residents will have another opportunity to share their ideas for improving Emmetsburg at a public design workshop at The Shores at Five Island tomorrow – Wednesday, August 11th.  This workshop is the culmination of an input-gathering process to identify transportation needs and opportunities for enhancements in Emmetsburg. Information collected earlier this spring through surveys and focus groups will be incorporated into a conceptual transportation and landscape enhancement plan.

A design team will be working at The Shores throughout the day on August 11 to develop a conceptual plan that meets the goals and needs of Emmetsburg. The public is invited to stop in between 3:00-5:30 PM to watch the design team at work, chat with members of the steering committee, provide input, and enjoy refreshments. A presentation and community feedback session is scheduled for 5:30 PM where citizens can learn about the concept designs and provide direct input to the design team on what they would like to see.  Results from focus group workshops and the random-sample transportation survey will also be shared. The Community Visioning Program is  sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Extension, Trees Forever, and professional landscape architects.  To learn more about the program and/or participating in the design workshop, visit communityvisioning.org/Emmetsburg or call Trees Forever Field Coordinator Jeff Jensen at 515-320-6756.
